Baleen whales in the Scotia Sea during January and February 2003

چکیده
Different species of baleen whales display distinct spatial distribution patterns in the Scotia Sea during austral summer. Passive acoustic and visual surveys for were conducted aboard RRS James Clark Ross around South Georgia January February 2003. Identified calls from four recorded survey including southern right (Eubalaena australis), blue (Balaenoptera musculus), fin (B. physalus) humpback (Megaptera novaeangliae). These data included up made by whales, downswept D tonal two possible types whale moans grunts. Visual detections right, fin, Antarctic minke bonaerensis sp.). Most occurred either (southern whales) or south boundary Circumpolar Current (ACC) along outer edge ice pack blue, whales). Fin exception, being only acoustically visually detected primarily central Sea, ACC front. In addition to identifiable these species, probable detected: 50Hz upswept pulsing calls. It is proposed that may produce calls, based on their similarities with North Atlantic Ocean. There was an overlap between locations sightings recordings but most similar attributed other parts Antarctica. More study required determine if call types, so, which species. The efficiency acoustics varied easier detect using acoustics, best falling extremes.

Lethal entanglement in baleen whales.
Understanding the scenarios whereby fishing gear entanglement of large whales induces mortality is important for the development of mitigation strategies. Here we present a series of 21 cases involving 4 species of baleen whales in the NW Atlantic, describing the available sighting history, necropsy observations, and subsequent data analyses that enabled the compilation of the manners in which ...
متن کاملThe atmospheric background situation in northern Scandinavia during January/February 2003 in the context of the MaCWAVE campaign
The atmosphere background wind field controls the propagation of gravity waves from the troposphere through the stratosphere into the mesosphere. During January 2003 the MaCWAVE campaign took place at Esrange, with the purpose of observing vertically ascending waves induced by orography. Temperature data from the U. Bonn lidar at Esrange (68 N/21 E) and the ALOMAR RMR lidar (69 N/16 E), wind da...
متن کاملThermoregulation in feeding baleen whales: Morphological and physiological evidence
Gray whales (Eschrichtius robutus) expose their immense oral cavities repeatedly to frigid waters when feeding. Morphological structures for heat conservation in the tongues of gray whales are described here in detail. Numerous individual countercurrent heat exchangers converge at the base of the tongue to form a bilateral pair of vascular bundles called the lingual rete. Temperature measuremen...
متن کاملDecoupling Tooth Loss from the Evolution of Baleen in Whales
Baleen whales, or mysticetes, include the largest vertebrates to have ever evolved. Their gigantism, evolutionary success, and ecological diversity have been linked to filter feeding. Mysticetes filter feed using elaborate keratinous baleen plates, which grow from the palate and allow them to strain large quantities of prey out of the water. While the earliest mysticetes retained the adult, min...
